Making Roman Blinds For Your Bedroom

Roman blinds can add a nice look to any bedroom and you can give them a custom touch by making them in fabric to match your bedding or other décor in the room. These blinds are basically a panel of fabric with laths encased in channels and cording to draw up the lathes so it simply takes a bit of sewing know how to make them.

When selecting material for your blinds, go with something that is a medium weight and match the colors to those in your bedroom.

Here’s what you need:

Medium weight fabric Curtain lining fabric 1/2″ wood laths 2 X 1 wood batton to fit across the window Plastic rings Angle brackets Screw eyes Nylon cord Tools such as a square, ruler, pencil, staple gun, cleat and screws

First, measure the window height and width from inside the casing. Cut the roman blinds material 2 ½” wider and 4″ longer than that measurement. Cut the curtain lining fabric the same width as the blinds fabric and 2″ longer.

Now you need to decide how many pleats or the size of the pleats. Typically, a roman blind has 6” pleats so you’ll want to divide the length of your fabric – 4″ by 12 since 6″ pleats would have the channels spaced 12″ apart. So, if you are making roman blinds for a window that is 48″, you should have cut the fabric to 52″ (since you added 4″ to the measurement). Then you have to divide the original 48” by 12 (the size of each channel) for a total of 4. So you will have 4 pleats in your blinds.

Alternative Down Comforters

Alternative down comforters have come to light for many reasons. These reasons could be because of taste or necessity, such as those that might have allergies. That’s right! Alternative down comforters are the next choice for people who have allergies to feathers, down, or dust mites. Why? Because the fillings in down comforters are replaced by synthetic and other materials instead of down from geese or ducks. Synthetic materials are gradually becoming as good, if not better than goose or duck down as a means of keeping you warm on those cold Winter nights, without the allergies. A lot of these synthetic materials used in comforters are also as breathable as the goose and duck down.

Childrens Furniture , Not Just For Fun

Standard furniture is unsuitable for young children; it can be uncomfortable and even dangerous so if you have a baby or a young child around the house you will definitely want to invest in some purpose built children’s furniture.

There are many pieces of childrens furniture available on the market for children. Here is a brief rundown of the main things you should purchase to cater for your child.

A cot and mattress is one of the first things you’ll need. It is essential that your baby or small child gets a sound night’s sleep and you’ll want to ensure that they are safe at night. Cots provide a contained environment and prevent your child from accidentally rolling out of bed or wandering around the house at night.

It’s best to purchase a new cot so that you can be sure it conforms to the latest safety standards. Mattresses come separately and you’ll want a comfortable spring mattress which should fit into the cot snugly. We offer a range of cots and a quality mattress to fit.

You’ll want your baby or toddler to sit at the dinner table with the rest of the family and the best way to cater for them when they are very young is to purchase a good quality high chair. We offer a range of high chairs which have a crotch strap to ensure your child doesn’t slip out and rounded corners and edges for safety. We also offer adjustable high chairs which you allow you to adjust the height of the seat and foot rests to make your child comfortable and extend the life of the highchair as they grow.

Platform beds are perfect for those who want a simple and minimalist look for their bedroom. Platform beds’ appeal lies in their low-profile sleeping surface, simple lines and sleek design. These are beds whose base consists of a raised, flat, hard, horizontal surface meant to support a mattress. Platform beds provide firm cushioning and with the support of slats, they eliminate the need for a box spring or mattress foundation. Add to it the fact that the space beneath the platforms can be used as storage, and it’s little wonder then that their popularity has been on the rise recently.

Platform bed offerings include platform beds in wood, metal or leather. In wood, you can choose from some fantastic, exclusive, classic Italian designs from the leaders in Europe for high-end, sophisticated and contemporary furnishing. There is also an innovative range in transitional furniture with products manufactured to the highest standard using top quality, 100% kiln dried tropical hardwoods and veneers for beds to ensure strength and longevity. The wood finishes are applied by hand producing a rich finish. Another unique option in wood is the eco-friendly furniture from sustainable pine. This range, in unfinished wood, is highly functional and cost-effective.

A wood platform bed gives the bedroom a simple look and a feeling of being with nature. The low physical profile of a contemporary platform bed goes well with other low-set furniture such as low coffee tables, dressers and other bedroom furnishings. Besides being sturdy and strong, metal platform beds score over wood as they require far less maintenance; no more repainting or re-staining. Metal platform bed frames are made of tubular or sheet steel. Sometimes, for effect, platform bed frames can also have headboards and footboards, as well.

Modern platform beds in sleek shapes can compliment practically any decor, whether it’s Contemporary Furniture , traditional or transitional. Simplicity makes a strong statement with a sophisticated leather platform bed.

The ever-popular Queen platform beds or King platform beds offer a practical solution with a modern design. These beds save you money since no box spring is required and generally the slatted platform frames have a center support to prevent sagging. Often platform beds have under bed storage drawers for an enclosed cabinet effect, to store bed linen, pillows, and various modern furniture items at your convenience.

Platform beds come in various sizes, including Twin, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King. In the US, Twin is also known as Single (38″ x 75″), Full as Double (53″ x 75″), Queen as Queen-size (60″ x 80″), King as Eastern King (76″ x 80″) and Cal King as California King (72″ x 84″). Cal King size beds, generally for tall people, are typically 12″ wider than a Queen-size bed and 4″ longer.

Hard Wood Flooring Needs a Shine

Posted by admin under Flooring

When you are dealing with your own floor you need to be sure that you know exactly what it needs. For example if you have a carpet and you have no vacuum cleaner you are really asking for trouble because going around and picking up individual pieces of dirt, hair, food, and other things which can end up on the floor is a chore that nobody is looking forward to.

The same could be said for Wood flooring; if you have a hard Wood flooring and you are not able to clean or sweep or polish this floor often enough, then you are just asking for trouble when it comes to making it sparkle.

Wood Flooring Just Needs Love

If you consider it though you should be very comfortable with the fact that Wood flooring just needs love like anything else. If you have a wood floor that is in need of some attention and then really the first thing you should do is get yourself a broom and get yourself a nice cloth depending upon how nice the flooring should be.

If you have older Wood flooring and you are just trying to keep it clean then that’s one thing; if you have brand new oak flooring which should be able to be eaten off of then that’s a completely different story and it’s something that you should be well aware of.

Wood flooring does need particular attention when it comes to cleaning because unlike a vacuum cleaning job on a carpeted floor, dust and dirt and other particles can accumulate on the wood floor seemingly without notice. Great stretches of time can go by where you don’t pay any attention to your wood floor until you have noticed that there are huge cobwebs and dust balls of mold and other gross things that need to be taken care of straightaway.

Wooden Floor Is Good Enough For Most

However the benefits of having a wooden floor are exponential in number. People often put there wooden floor in their nicest room in their home because they feel it deserves a much more attention than they give the rest of their home. Often times these rooms will be unused for days or weeks on end and then they will pull out the nice china and pull out the big platter and have a whole bunch of friends and family come over to enjoy a fine meal and admire their find flooring. While this may seem like an exaggeration to some, the truth is actually a lot more closely held then many people may believe and this is something that everybody should remember what they are talking about a really nice wooden floor.

Lest you think that feng-shui is Chinese mambo-jambo based on superstitions, feng-shui actually contains common sense advice and good aesthetic sense in decorating your house. You will delightedly discover that feng-shui can even be applied to the kids’ table & chairs in your children’s bedrooms.

Color Me Light and Happy

Color plays a very important part in our lives - it can both influence our moods and convey our feelings in ways more powerful than actions and words. Thus, you have to choose colors for the kids’ table & chairs that not only harmoniously blends in with the general color theme of the bedroom but will also favorably influence your children’s moods.

According to the principles of feng-shui, your best color choices for children’s furniture are earth-toned light colors that encourage relaxation and happiness. You can opt for colors like warm yellows, light oranges, soothing terracotta, pleasing greens, pale violets and baby pinks. Of course, this color scheme also goes for the entire bedroom.

On the other hand, you have to avoid installing dark-colored kids’ table & chairs that induces dark moods. Stay away from depressingly dark blues, sinister black trims, and boring gray shades in kids’ furniture if you wish to make for a welcoming children’s bedroom.

However, you have to consult your children on your color choices especially when they are of an age when color preferences are more pronounced. You can compromise by explaining your reasons for your color theme and allowing your child to pick out the style of the kids’ table & chairs he wants.

Location, Location, Location

In feng-shui, the location of furniture and fixtures in the bedrooms is paramount. Thus, you will hear of beds accessible from both sides, beds not facing the door’s direct line of sight, and beds with headboards in feng-shui.

For kids table & chairs, the best location you can provide for is at the northeast corner of the bedroom. With a study lamp to complete the setup, you are reinforcing the value of education and the value you attach to his accomplishments, big and small, academic and artistic and athletic. On the south wall, you can set up a display area for all his accomplishments like crafts, citation letters, awards, ribbons, trophies and even test papers with good scores!

The important thing is that the bedroom’s layout of furniture and fixture is conducive to free and easy movement during the daytime and relaxed contentment during the nighttime. In this line, remember that for children, less clutter is better.

Optimal Lighting

Though you have to encourage children not to be afraid of the dark, you have to ensure that their bedrooms have optimal lighting. Not only is this strongly advised by feng-shui practitioners but it holds common sense advice because children do need to see well within the confines of their bedrooms.

That said, you can put in lights in the bedrooms that contain several levels of lighting, of which dimmers are the best choice. However, if you do not want dimmers, then just ensure that the lights are neither too strong nor too weak. The latter discourages good sleeping patterns while the latter strains the eyes, both of which are definitely not good for children’s health.

Again, you have to ensure that the kids’ table & chairs set that serve as their study-cum-studio area contain appropriate lighting. You don’t want your little Einstein and Little Picasso to suffer from sub-par lighting!

Indeed, with a little practice, feng-shui can be easy and good for you and your children!

The Energy Performance Certificate is essential by law when a building is constructed, sold or put up for rent. It is said that every home that is marketed for sale must have an EPC Energy Performance Certificate as part of a HIP (Home Information Pack), which details a home’s energy efficiency.

Who offers you an Energy Performance Certificate?

A qualified Domestic Energy Assessor offers you a certificate after certain assessment of your property. In order to issue a certificate it is necessary to conduct a survey of your property, which can be carried out by an Home Inspector too. There are various types of EPC’s offered such as rented property EPC, landlords EPC, Social Housing Epc, Public building DEC, Letting EPC.

A valid EPC, is vital to sell or rent your house. The improvements that Landlords can make through the energy saving allowance; will in most cases have a direct positive impact on the energy efficiency rating of the Energy Performance Certificate. It offers a rating for your home at present and also rates if there’s any energy saving improvements carried out. Rating is done in this way, If it’s a, it is said to be highest level, most efficient and G, which is least efficient. The energy saving measures would need to be put in place prior to the assessment taking place for this to be evidenced on the EPC. It also helps one to save money and at the same time helps the environment too.

Your house is assessed based on certain criteria:

Age of your building

Fixed light efficiency

Adjacent building’s thermal property

Heat loss

Walls and lofts’ insulation level

Method of heating and controls used

Volumetric calculation of all floors

Fire is one of the biggest dangers facing domestic properties. Just look at the statistics: in 2006, the main cause of house fires in the UK was misuse of equipment and appliances, with 16,200 fires having been started in this way. As such, the primary source of ignition was cooking appliances, which accounted for 56 per cent.

Practicing electrical safety is, therefore, not only vital for saving your life, but also your home and its contents. And, whilst it is not possible to completely eradicate the possibility of fire, there are certain elementary precautions you can take, to limit as far as possible, the likelihood it will happen.

According to experts, many fires start at night so it’s imperative to be aware of what to do before going to bed. This includes switching off and unplugging any appliances not being used, such as mobile phone chargers. Portable heaters or electrical fires should never be left on overnight and the doors to all rooms should be closed.

Ensuring all your electrical appliances comply with the relevant safety standards is another must. This means looking out for the CE mark, the BEAB mark, the BS safety mark or British Standard number when you buy electrical equipment. It also pays to be cautious of second-hand electrical items, since a study into their safety concluded that one in four does not meet the required standards.

When establishing if your home is at risk, there are certain fundamental factors to be aware of. For example, pay attention to issues like hot plugs and sockets, flickering lights, or frequently blown fuses. These can potentially indicate problems like loose wiring.

Furthermore, cords should never be run under carpets or furniture, since they can easily overheat and ignite a fire. Frayed or split power leads are another issue to be conscious of: damaged ones should not be covered over with tape, but replaced immediately.

It is also imperative that you fit smoke alarms around your property. It is a fact that out of the 55,800 domestic fires in 2006, 25,800 failed to have a smoke alarm in the fire area. They should be tested every week to ensure they work and the battery should be replaced annually.

Having adequate home insurance is also crucial. Fire is one of the most destructive elements and if one breaks out in your home, regardless of how big or small it is; this will cause exceptional damage. And, whether your carpet has been melted due to a too-hot heater, or your entire house has burned down, you need the right insurance to financially protect yourself and your family.

Most people think about furnishing their new house when it is almost ready to occupy. A furniture store will then be visited and numerous options explored. But due to ill planning of the house, however, you are unable to set up such furniture in your house and exploit its full potential. A little forethought for furniture requirements of the house at the time of building it would have avoided such a situation. This article is a guide to plan for your furniture at the construction stage itself.

Planning for setting up furniture should be done along with the drafting of the house plan. It should consider all the rooms of the house. Let us start with that small but all important place, the portico (lest we forget it here as well!). The portico should be able to hold two to three chairs without obstructing the main entrance. Low, easy chairs would be most suitable here, and excessively formal chairs would not be suitable. Plan for leaving adequate space for clear passage even after the chairs are put.

Coming to the dining room one should plan for the dining room furniture consisting of the dining table, chairs and hutch. You can plan for a dining table to suit your room design, and can choose from a large variety of shapes and sizes. You could decide whether to go in for a separate or an inbuilt dining room hutch in the wall, depending on whether you plan to change the settings a few years down the line.

Kitchen furniture consists of mostly racks for condiments and cooking spoons. Rack for condiments and other consumables may be positioned either at your right or at your left side. Then the cooking spoon and other cookware rack can be placed on the opposite side, but facing you. At the same time this rack can be positioned just above the sink.

Coming to the bedroom, if we plan the entrance door and the bath door to be on the same wall we can have a lot of leverage to position the bed room furniture. This is because doors require some place to open out, and placing them adjacent to each other will leave the other three walls free for you to place your furniture as you please. If you desire, you can place a fixed wall chest at the construction stage itself to save double the effort later.

The living room is the place where most attention is required. As a place where most of our guests are received, a lot of practical as well as smart looking furniture is required here. Also this room will have a number of windows and doors. Repeated trials will be required while drafting the plans to determine the furniture positions so that it does not obstruct the doors and other passages.

While planning, visiting a wholesale Amish furniture store will be of immense help as they will have a wide variety of furniture for various needs and of latest trends. This can be used to decide the type of furniture you require and their space requirements.

By considering the above points you should be able to plan your furnishing. With the designer/architect for your home, a proper plan for your house can be finalized. Necessary changes can be made by having an animated view of your house before actual construction starts.

I hope you are now ready to plan for a properly furnished house.

DIY Renovation For Small Bathrooms

Posted by admin under DIY

The bathroom can be one of the more troublesome spots for DIY or do it yourself enthusiasts, because not only would you be dealing with a fairly limited space, but also, nearly everything in it has been fixed, or had installed in a permanent manner. Pneumatic drills, concrete nails and other such installation methods mean you would be dealing with concrete or granite when you want to install something. In any case, it is still possible, so go ahead and DIY freely.

The installation of toilet bowls is one of the most difficult DIY projects in the bathroom area. Just how does one install a new toilet bowl? Follow these simple steps and watch your new bathroom toilet stand high and proud.

The steps

1. First locate the water source for your new toilet bowl. Often, water pipes have been laid down near the base of the ground, or have been semi-fixed on the floor. Make sure that the water valve has been turned off before you attempt to work with water pipes. After you have located a workable point with the water source, measure the distance to your new toilet bowl. Remember, make exact measurements. Cut the needed length for the new toilet bowl.

2. The flange for the new installation should be installed as well. Slip it over the pipe and begin installing the valve, too. Toilets operate with what we call compression washers; install the compression washer and make sure that the whole assemblage is secured tightly. No leaks means less water wasted.

3. The drain plug for the new toilet should be cleaned thoroughly of any debris that might hinder the passage of water. Papers and small plastic pieces should be removed. After the cleaning, the flange should be finally secured.

4. Wax seals are included to make sure that the base of the toilet bowl and therefore, the water and all its future contents would not spill unto the surface of the bathroom. Place the wax seal on the toilet correctly as well.

5. Silicon caulk or other similar bonding agents can be placed in addition to the wax seal to make sure what has to go down, will go down, and not out.

6. If you have no one to help you out in this particular do it yourself project, it’s alright. The task can be done splendidly by even just one person. The success depends largely on your own familiarity with your bathroom and the basic principles of plumbing. If you followed the instructions here to the letter, then there is now way that you are going to fail. Have fun while doing it, as well.

7. The toilet must be aligned to the nearest centimeter with the wax seal. Failure to do so might cause the toilet to flop over or leak. The correct measurements should have been done well before the toilet seat if finally lowered into its final place in the bathroom.

8. If your toilet bowl has retaining bolts, install them all. Retaining bolts prevent your toilet bowl from falling sideways or flopping over. In some instances, the weight becomes a factor, so never ignore these little bolts. Your safety and the success of this DIY project depend on these little details.

The recipe for making concrete is very simple. The ingredients are Portland cement, sand, gravel and water. Sand and gravel are referred to as aggregates. Sometimes other aggregates such as crushed stone or cinders are used.

When Portland cement is mixed with water a chemical reaction takes place which makes the cement harden. In doing so it binds together the sand and gravel mixed with it to become one solid rocklike mass.

Many varieties of cement are made of which five are commonly used and available at most suppliers.

STANDARD CEMENT. This is ordinary grey cement. Used for all general construction. If you don’t specify otherwise this is what you will get when you buy cement.

WHITE CEMENT. Similar in all properties to standard cement except that it is white in color. Used to mix light colored concrete and mortar and for making colored cement.

HIGH EARLY STRENGTH CEMENT. Hardens and develops strength much faster than standard cement. Allows quick use of driveways and walks.

AIR ENTRAINED CEMENT. This is not as strong as standard cement but has high resistance to frost and salt. Useful where salt is applied for ice and snow removal.

MASONRY CEMENT. A special mixture for use with sand to make mortar. Has more plasticity, water retention and ease of handling.

The type of concrete mix is expressed by three numbers such as 1:2:4 which means 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 4 parts gravel or stone. To make good concrete you must measure ingredients accurately.

If you don’t want to mix your own you can buy,at somewhat higher cost, prepackaged mixes. These contain the right proportion of ingredients to which you only need to add water.

Concrete can be mixed by hand on a plywood sheet at least 4 by 6 feet. It can also be mixed on a
concrete sidewalk or driveway. Mix the cement and sand till completely blended then add the gravel and mix till coated with cement. Make a crater in the middle of the pile and pour in about half the measured amount of water. Rake the sides of the pile up and into the water. When all the water is absorbed make a new crater and add the rest of the water.

Mixing large amounts of concrete by hand is hard work. It is better to buy or rent a concrete mixer if you need a lot of concrete. These instructions for how to make concrete are very simple and will provide you with good concrete.

You can also make your own concrete blocks using hand made molds. This is a great home business opportunity. Concrete blocks are always in strong demand everywhere and you can have a home part time business supplying them to building supply stores or directly to consumers.

Working from your garage your costs are very low and you can turn out a quality product at a very competitive price. When you reach the stage of needing increased production you can build a concrete block making machine from auto parts and sheet metal

This home built concrete block machine can turn out 800 or more blocks per day and is every bit as good as a commercial model which costs thousands of dollars. Plans and instructions for making the machine and the hand molds are readily available.

Swimming pools are used by different people in order to relax, exercise or generally have a good time. People sometimes spend up to hours immersed in a swimming pool. This is the reason why it is important to regularly clean the pool. You do not want to get people sick by letting them swim in a dirty pool, do you?

Cleaning a pool can take a pretty long time to complete without the proper tools. In fact, without pool cleaning tools, it is doubtful that anyone can do a satisfactory job of cleaning a pool. The process could also take so long that by the time you are done cleaning the pool, there will be a whole new mess waiting for you. Pool cleaning tools show the progress of man. Pool cleaning tools prove that man can create solutions to any problem that comes his way.

There are various types of pool cleaning tools in use today:

Leaf Rake - This pool cleaning tool is used to remove floating leaves from the pool surface. It is important to remove leaves from the water surface because leaving them there to rot could introduce bacteria to the water. Leaves in the surface also make a pool very unattractive. Having a leaf rake can help you get clear the surface of the pool without even getting into the pool. You could just stand at the edge and clean at your leisure.

Surface Skimmer - This device is used to remove the surface of any smaller particles. This pool cleaning tool often has finer mesh than a leaf rake. Because of this, it is able to trap the smallest particulate and remove it from the pool. The surface skimmer is also used to remove the particulates caused by adding certain chemicals in the pool.

Brush - This allows people to get rid of the dirt that stuck to the bottom of the pool. The best way to see a pool’s dirt is to stand at the edge. Because of this, the brush is attached to a telescopic arm that lets the pool cleaner brush the bottom of the pool without getting in the water. The brush is a very effective pool cleaning tool to remove those stubborn stains and dirt stuck on the bottom of the pool.

Vacuum Attachments - Brushing would only separate the crud from the bottom of the pool. The question that remains, however, is “how do you get the crud out of the pool?” Well, you actually vacuum it. This pool cleaning tool is used by many people to suck the dirt from the bottom of the pool. Why should this be done? Well, we have already discussed that this can actually make people sick. However, the crud can also be dangerous to swimmers in that it can be very slippery. If this is left alone, it could cause a lot of accidents. Swimmers would be unable to stand or walk on the pool bottom properly.

Telescopic Poles - People mainly think of these as accessories and not as actual pool cleaning tools. However, you should know that these telescopic poles make all of the other tools useful. Without telescopic poles, people would have to get into the pool in order to clean it. This is one pool cleaning tool which should not be underestimated.

This is the various types of pool cleaning tools that can help you save time and have better result, this cleaning tools can preserves your pool condition and minimal the natural abrasion.
